Friday started out with a more technical session based on the clients that showed up that day. We climbed up through a creek bottom into some technical tree riding and eventually found some small drops and pillows to play around on.

Saturday all of our clients were fairly new to riding. We hit up some big meadows that had cliffs surrounded them. That’s where we found two pretty big cliff drops. One was probably 30 foot and the other a 20 footer. Aaron showed us just how easy he made launching off cliffs look. The clients were amused. Later on the day Ryan would throw out some huge boost up the face of a mountain and send himself rocketing through the air. A good 100 feet from what it appeared.

Sunday things got real crazy! Aaron started off the day by jumping the Mirror Lake road gap. Later in the day Ryan and Aaron would both send it off a 50 foot cliff above Fehr Lake. All in all it was an awesome weekend where they not only helped many of the clients learn new technique but also were able to show us how they ride in the backcountry.

            Preparation and Pre-Ride Meeting

For starters, all riders on any group ride should show up prepared. This means making sure your gas tank is full, your basic maintenance is done and your machine is ready to go for the trip ahead. No one wants to wait around while you handle some details that could have been covered the night before.

Once everyone arrives, it’s good to hold a general rider’s meeting. If there’s a group leader, this person will dictate basics like the riding route, hand signals to be used, any planned rest stops and other important details. It’s generally best to assign a specific lead and tail rider, both experienced riders if possible. If there are a variety of riding skills present in the group, the leader should assess this and split up the groupings appropriately.

            Group Size and Sub-Groups

In most cases, it’s best to keep riding groups to between five and seven riders, depending on the trail type and crowd levels of course. If your group is much larger than this, it’s common to break it up into a few sub-groups, each with their own lead and sweep rider. At least one rider in each sub-group should have a cell phone, first aid kit and tool kit in case of any issues or emergencies during the ride.

            Riding Formation

It’s important to follow a proper riding formation to keep space between each bike. The lead rider generally rides in the left third of a given lane or space, while the next rider stays at least one second behind – and on the opposite side of the lane, allowing for plenty of braking time if needed. The rest of the group should follow the same pattern.

If the road is particularly curvy, or if you’re on a dirt bike trail that demands it, single-file is okay. In these cases, though, we recommend leaving two full seconds of space between yourself and the rider in front of you. Avoid side-by-side formations, as they generally reduce space and ability to swerve to avoid obstacles.

            Waiting Up and Group Separation

If you’re among the leaders of the group, regularly check your rear-view to ensure all riders are keeping up. If someone falls behind, slow down and allow them to catch up.

If you happen to become separated from your group, do not panic. The group should have already set up a procedure for this kind of event, including a place where the group will re-convene and wait for everyone to arrive. Never break the law or attempt anything dangerous to catch back up.

When it comes to safety and maintaining your health while riding a motorcycle, whether on a tour or in any other situation, one area that’s often overlooked is hearing protection. Motorcycles are loud by nature, and it’s important to understand how their noise impacts your hearing and the kinds of protection you should consider here. Let’s take a look at some vital areas to consider.

            Decibels and Hearing Damage

Sound is measured by decibels, and the average human begins to experience hearing damage when noise levels reach about 85 decibels or so. Unfortunately, the average motorcycle moving at 40 miles per hour gives off 90 decibels of noise, meaning that much of your time spent on the motorcycle will include decibel levels that could damage your hearing. And down similarly unfortunate lines, this damage often cannot be reversed once it happens. Once we lose hearing, it’s impossible to get it back.

One of the more common responses we hear to this basic data: Well that’s okay, I’ll simply use my helmet to block out some of the noise. Sadly, this is a mistaken viewpoint – helmets actually only increase noise levels reaching the ear because of the way they vibrate during riding, and they are not designed to prevent sound at all. With this in mind, our next section will dig into your options for limiting decibels and

            Hearing Protection Options

There are a few options available for protecting your ears and hearing, most of which involve inserting some kind of plug to block sound. Most of these options will remove at least 30 decibels from your hearing, allowing you to get back to within normal, healthy ranges while riding. Options include:

          · Disposable earplugs: These are easy to find at any store, plus cheap and simple to use. You can buy bulk packs that reduce the cost of each pair to a few cents apiece, valuable since you can only use them once.

          · Wax or rubber balls: These are multi-use earplug formats you can mold into the shape of your ear. They’re preferable for those with unusual ear shapes or who struggle with disposable earplugs and comfort.

          · Custom-fitted earplugs: Other frequent riders opt for fully customized earplugs, which contour to your ear and also don’t grease up on hot days like wax or rubber can. These options will usually be the most expensive, however.

If you’re looking for the best possible UTV experience for you and your family this summer, Tracked Out Adventures is the place to be. We have a wide range of UTV

If this summer is your first experience with a UTV, you may be wondering about a basic pre-ride checklist to ensure everything is safe and ready to go. Here are several areas you should consider here, each of which are simple to check on and require very little technical knowledge, if any at all.

            Check Tires

For starters, check on the tires that will support your entire UTV ride. For side-by-side vehicles, tires take quite a beating – they carry heavy loads over tough terrain on a regular basis. Before pushing off for your ride, check the treads on your tires to ensure they’re strong and have not worn down.

In addition, get a tire pressure gauge and check the pressure levels. If needed, go to a gas station with an air pump and fill your tires to the proper levels, which you can ask our pros about in advance. If you notice any worn treads or cracks, speak to our team about replacing these before you leave the store.

            Fluid Levels

There are a few fluids you may want to check on, but the most important is oil and coolant. Oil is vital for providing lubrication to various engine components, just like in a car or motorcycle – with improper levels, you risk friction and other concerns.

Coolant, on the other hand, is in charge of ensuring the engine never overheats. All you have to do with coolant is to maintain its level, which is shown on the cap. Coolant is available at any auto store, or even most gas stations.

            Radiator Cap

Speaking of coolant, it’s sealed in the engine by what’s called the radiator cap. This cap also helps pull coolant into the engine, but a loose seal could lead to overheating due to coolant leaking. For this reason, make sure the cap is properly sealed and has not worn down.

            Battery Life

Like with any vehicle, the battery is the heart of operations – but can wear down over time. UTV batteries may discharge slowly if they’ve been stored for a long time, a process that can be countered by hooking them up to a tender.

            Filters

Air filters are in charge of preventing dirt and other particles from making it into your engine. If filters are clogged or dirty, or their intake area is messy, the engine won’t function as well.

           Tracked Out Adventures

, we’re happy to help with towing needs for any of our UTV, motorcycle or even snowmobile rentals. We even provide quality trailer rentals at affordable rates, allowing you to enjoy a weekend trip even if you don’t own a trailer. With this in mind, here are some basic tips we can offer on the process of hooking up a trailer and towing UTVs or other vehicles.

            Preparing for Tow

Before you get to work attaching or towing anything, you need to ensure your tow vehicle and trailer can handle the weight requirements involved with the UTV. This will be found by obtaining a measure known as the Gross Combined Weight Rating, which is available for all vehicles in the owner’s manual or online. This number tells you how much weight the vehicle can haul, including cargo and passengers.

Once you’re sure you can support the UTV and any equipment needed, make sure you’re prepared for the process. If you’ve never towed a UTV before, take some time to lay out the steps, which we’ll go over in our subsequent sections.

            Trailer Hook-Up

If possible, locate flat ground for hooking up the trailer and loading periods. Set the trailer up so the tongue sits just above the ball hatch, then back your vehicle up until the trailer latch sits right below the tongue. From here, put the tongue on the ball joint and ensure it’s attached tightly. Wrap the tow chains under the tongue using an X design, then connect the chains to your tow vehicle to ensure it doesn’t become unhitched.

            Loading Tips

Again, ensure you’re on flat ground first if possible. From there, line your UTV up with the ramp and slowly ride it up – you want enough momentum to get up to the top, but not enough to shoot you past your destination and risk damaging the vehicle.

Where possible, look to balance the weight of the UTV on the trailer. Try not to put too much weight on the front or rear, which can strain the vehicle or even snap the hitch.

            Driving Advice

It’s important to remember that once you have a trailer with a heavy item like a UTV attached to the back of your vehicle, driving safety habits are not the same. You need more space to make turns, for instance, and more time to stop due to the additional weight on your brakes. If you’re changing lanes, you have to remember how much longer your cargo makes your vehicle.

We highly recommend driving slowly and defensively when hauling a UTV or any other piece of major equipment. Also ensure you check areas like tire pressure, lights and mirrors to check every possible safety box.

Like any thrilling outdoor adventure, riding motorcycles requires some basic preparation and collection of the proper gear. This is the case for everyone from weekend road riders to dedicated trail riders, all of whom need many of the same kinds of things to stay safe and happy while on the bike.

around Utah. Here are several of the most basic and common pieces of motorcycle equipment you’ll need:

            Helmet

First and foremost, anyone who rides any form of bike, from a road bicycle up to a Harley, needs to be wearing a helmet while they do so. Not only is this law in most areas of the country, it’s the simplest and most straightforward way to stay safe.

Particularly if you ride heavily, but even if you don’t, we generally recommend a full-face helmet that offers maximum protection. These helmets can also protect you from wind, bugs and other debris that might get in your way. Make sure the helmet you buy fits correctly, and ensure it’s accredited by a crash test agency that tests the helmet well in advance.

            Boots

If you’re wearing day-to-day sneakers or, god forbit, sandals while riding, you’re making a big mistake. Not only do these products fail to protect your feet adequately, they could diminish your riding experience.

Instead, purchase riding boots that are dedicated to this sort of thing. They’ll help your feet grip the pedals for long rides, plus protect them from hazards. Like helmets, ensure the riding boots you choose fit well and are made by a reputable manufacturer.

            Gloves

A big part of operating a motorcycle or dirt bike is grip, and this area becomes much simpler if you have proper riding gloves. Think about riding with any moisture on the ground, for instance – gripping the handlebars will be tough, as it will be if you’re sweating during the summer heat. Gloves will also protect you from any scrapes or cuts on your hands if you happen to fall.

            Neck Coverage

Between the helmet and your chest area might be some exposed skin, and many riders choose to cover this with a neckerchief or something similar. It protects from wind, rain, debris, and even sunburn.

            Clothing Layers

Even on hot days, we recommend wearing full-length clothing while riding and avoiding short sleeves. This will protect you from both physical dangers and the sun’s rays. While you might worry about getting hot during the summer, there are many lightweight and breathable full-length options meant to keep you cool and well-ventilated.

I’m here to help answer some of those. Our daily guiding in the Uintas goes as follows.

We meet at 8am at one of the trailheads in the Uinta National Forest that we are permitted to leave from. Those trailheads are either Soapstone or one of the few near Strawberry located off of US-40. We will reach out beforehand and let you know where we intend on meeting. Be there at 8 am!

Between 8 am and 9 am we get dressed for the day in our Trails West RPM trailer. It’s nice and warm inside so when you arrive at the trailhead make your way in and say hi!

Once everyone is dressed and ready for the day we will have a briefing and talk about things like the weather, avalanche conditions, where we are going to ride, the type of terrain we will be taking you in and answer any questions you may have.

After that, if you are renting a snowmobile we will go over some details on that and then we will head out on the mountain around 9 am.

From there it’s a full day of fun on the snow riding in terrain that is a good match for your riding ability. Out on the mountain, we will also be eating lunch, so be sure to pack a lunch, drinks and snacks. We highly recommend bringing an extra set of goggles and gloves. If you don’t have an extra set or you are renting gear from us let us know so we can make sure you’re prepared.

Our guides will help you get unstuck if you end up sinking in that Utah powder! We are also here to help you with any riding techniques or questions you may have. Our number one goal is to help you have an amazing day.

We will be wrapping up the day around 4 pm and start heading back to the trailhead. Once back we will wrap up. If you are joining us for multiple days you may store your gear and sled in our trailer and we will make sure it’s nice and dry for you the next day.

Want photos and video of your trip? No problem we will make sure to get plenty. Feel free to bring your cameras and GoPro as well.

You’re thinking about booking a single track guided ride with Tracked Out Adventures, and you want to know what to expect?

TOA has a fleet of 2018 250 XC-W’s you can rent, or if you own a bike you can bring that too. We highly recommend a bike that is set up for a single track or enduro riding. Our bikes are equipped with handguards, skid plates and pipe guards. We want you to enjoy riding without having to worry about damaging the bike.

Are you planning on flying in and don’t have gear? That’s ok. We have all the gear you may possibly need. From Helmet, goggles, gloves, jersey, pants, boots, chest protector and hydration packs. Everything is cleaned before it’s used again. We also use a great deal of Klim and Alpinestar gear.

We are in the season in Utah where it may be hot and dry, or cold and wet. Hopefully, the weatherman gives us a good heads up, but things change on the fly in the mountains. We will try and be prepared as much as we can.

You have two options when it comes to meeting up with us. If you’re staying in the SLC Valley or Park City we can pick you up. You can also choose to meet up with us at the trailhead.

Many people ask what else to bring? Water is the most important thing to bring. You want to make sure you show up already hydrated as it will make your day a lot more pleasant. If you are on a half-day or evening ride with us we encourage you to bring snacks. On a full day ride please bring snacks and something to eat for lunch.

Once we pick you up or meet up with you at the trailhead we have a few forms for you to fill out, after that, we will discuss the day’s plan, routes, safety and anything else pertaining to the ride.

Depending on the level of rider you are, which we will discuss beforehand, will determine the type of terrain and where we ride. You can expect to ride some rocky spots and some really nice flowy sections as well. Our premiere trail we guide on features desert-like terrain, riding in cedar trees as well as riding in the deep forest, it really has it all. There will be times you will be on the side of some pretty steep terrain if you are afraid of heights you’ll want to let us know in advance so we can pick some more manageable terrain. There are trails in our permitted area to ride for every level of rider.

The views will be amazing, and the fall colors are starting to come out. Now is one of the best times to come ride with Tracked Out Adventures. Make sure and bring a GoPro if you want.

While the snow is still covering most of Northern Utah’s best single track, there is still so much to explore if you head a little south. Moab is full of some of the best single track riding out there.

One of our favorites! Winter came late this year and we wont have as much spring riding to do, but there is still plenty of snow to ride on out there. The high Uintas are a great place to ride good snow right now. With plenty of hidden areas that are stacked up great. Check the local avalanche report and head out! We hear Fairview and Logan aren’t too bad right now either.
